Whose Is It? The Ultimate Guide to Possessives

Part 1: Possessive with 's

The easiest way to show who owns something is by adding an apostrophe ( ' ) and an s to the end of a noun.

1. Singular Nouns (One Person or Thing)

When we talk about one person, one animal, or one thing, we simply add 's.

  • This is Leo's bag. 🦁
  • Where is the teacher's desk?
  • Sarah's pen is blue.

2. Regular Plural Nouns (More Than One Person or Thing)

If a word is plural and already ends in -s (like cats, parents, students), we don't want to make it sound crowded. Instead of adding another "s", we just add the apostrophe (') at the very end.

  • The cats' food is in the kitchen. (Multiple cats share the food) 🐱🐱
  • My parents' car is blue. (The car belongs to both Mom and Dad)
  • The students' books are on the desks.

💡 Quick Check:

One boy's bike = 1 boy 🚲
Two boys' bike = 2 boys sharing a bike 🚲

3. Irregular Plural Nouns

Some plural words in English do not end in -s (like children, men, women, people). Because they don't have an "s" at the end, we treat them like singular words and add 's.

  • The children's toys are on the floor. 🧸
  • The men's shoes are over there.

Part 2: Possessive Pronouns

Sometimes, we don't want to repeat the name of the object over and over again.

Instead of saying: "This is my book. That is your book." We can say: "This is my book. That is yours."

Possessive pronouns completely replace the noun. Here is how they change:

Subject PronounPossessive Adjective (+ Noun)Possessive Pronoun (Stand-alone)
IMy bookIt is mine.
YouYour bookIt is yours.
HeHis bookIt is his.
SheHer bookIt is hers.
WeOur bookIt is ours.
TheyTheir bookIt is theirs.

Examples in Action:

  • "This is my dog." → "The dog is mine." 🐶
  • "Is this Anna's hat?" → "Yes, it is hers." 👒
  • "Ben found his ball." → "The ball is his." ⚽

🚫 The Golden Rule: No Secret Apostrophes!

Here is a major trap that many students fall into: Possessive pronouns NEVER use an apostrophe!

Yours | ❌ Your's
It's
(Note: "It's" always means "It is"!)
