First and Second Conditionals

First vs. Second Conditionals

Today we are going to look at English conditionals, which we often just call "if clauses."

These can be a little tricky! In English, we change the verb tense to show whether a situation is a real possibility or just an imaginary dream.

Let's break down the two most common types you need to know for the B1 level.

The First Conditional: Real Possibilities

We use the First Conditional to talk about things that are very likely to happen in the future if a specific condition is met. It is real and possible!

  • The Structure: If + Present Simple, will + base verb
  • Example: If it rains tomorrow, we will stay inside.
  • Why? Because raining tomorrow is a real possibility.

The Second Conditional: Imaginary Situations

We use the Second Conditional to talk about dreams, wishes, or situations that are unreal or highly unlikely right now. This is where it gets strange: we use the past tense in the "if" clause, but we are not talking about the past! We use the past tense to show that the idea is "far away" from reality.

  • The Structure: If + Past Simple, would + base verb
  • Example: If I won the lottery, I would buy a house in Phuket.
  • Why? Because I probably won't win the lottery. It is just a fun dream.

The Golden Rule:

  • Can it really happen? Use First Conditional (Present + Will).
  • Is it just a dream or imagination? Use Second Conditional (Past + Would).
